Benefits of a Stainless Steel Barbell – Is It Worth The Upgrade?

In a poll, 56% of the GGE followers voted that upgrading to a Stainless Steel coating on a barbell is worth it, which is quite a bit considering the additional price can be $100 or more.

It seems like a worthwhile upgrade for stainless steel comes at an extra cost, so what are the benefits?

  • It will eliminate the chance of rust that accumulates overtime if not properly maintained. Maintenance will likely be required monthly depending on your climate and/or amount of chalk used.
  • Has a much more “natural feel” than bars coated in something like Cerakote, E Coat, Black Zinc, or Black Oxide. The feel of the knurl is much more noticeable and it’s easier to obtain a firm grip.
  • Stainless Steel doesn’t take away from the natural barbell look like other coatings do.

In the end, it probably comes down to where you’re lifting? If you’re in a humid climate and in a garage setting, it’ll likely end up saving a ton of time not having to perform maintenance on a regular basis. If you’re lifting in a basement or non-humid climate, it may not be worth the upgrade.
