The History of Strongman Implements – Part 2 with The Kurtlocker

Introduction

@VintageWeightsPGH and @The Kurtlocker dive deep into the history of Strongman Implements, including The Atlas Stone, Inver Stone, Farmers Walk, and the Super Yoke.

This episode can be watched or listened to on Garage Gym RadioSpotify, Apple, or wherever you listen to podcasts.

(1:09) Loading Medley

Fillable sandbags are the easiest way for a home gym owner to start accomplishing this. You’d find the loading medley in a strongman event where you carry or drag irregular objects onto a platform. Rob and Kurt also discuss their personal experiences with this in their home gym.

(2:54) The Atlas Stone

Hundreds of years ago, Icelanders proved their strength by lifting stones. This helped determine a ship captain’s work ethic and, ultimately pay. Also discussed was the Inver Stone (one of the most famous lifting stones in the world), other historical feats of strength with atlas stones, and your home gym options.

(21:30) Farmers Walk

This is a very accessible movement for many within the home gym, and there are various ways to accomplish this type of walk. The farmers walk is an exercise where you hold something heavy in each hand while walking.

Kurt and Rob also discuss the best ways to add this to your home gym setup.

(27:40) Super Yoke

This strength movement includes carrying a large object across the top of your shoulders and back. While a typical yoke is used today, it all started with the fridge carry, which was the birth of the yoke.

The car carry came next, and many other objects have been added since.

You’ll also hear of Kurt’s yoke recommendations for a home gym within this section.
