Introduction
Ask someone what they miss most from a commercial gym setting, and a few specific pieces of large specialty strength equipment will likely be mentioned. A leg press machine is high up on the list for many. However, these are typically pricey and take up a decent chunk of space. Therefore, it’s an unlikely option for many home gyms.
HOWEVER, the Force USA Compact Leg Press is a unit that helps combat both of these issues. It’s not quite as bulky and, while still an investment, much lower-priced than most leg press options currently available. In addition, it’s smooth, easy to operate, built solidly, and provides lower body strength exercises without much putting a ton of pressure on the spine.
Product Details
The smaller footprint of this leg press machine (52″ W, 65″ D, 57″ H) is what makes it an appealing leg press option for many home gym owners. It would take up a little more than 1 horse stall mat. The Force USA Leg Press Hack Squat Combo would take up nearly 2x more floor space to compare. When thinking about space needed, this is also quite different from a functional trainer or power rack, where you’ll need some additional outside space to use. All you need is space to load up the weight for this machine, and you stay within the space allotted. Therefore, it fits pretty nicely into corners or in between other pieces of equipment.
While using, there is an increased focus on legs and less strain on the spine. It also includes outstanding back support. Overall it’s extremely comfortable to use, and full-depth was not an issue in getting to. Force claims that it can support someone up to 6’6″. Below is a 6’2″ example.
An adjustable safety pin is included so that the depth you’d like to reach is the maximum you’ll go. This serves as a safety feature as well. In addition, the footplate measures 23″ x 20″, so you have the ability to target different muscles by placing your feet wider, closer, towards the top, etc. Adjustable angles on the seat and footplate are also included to help get the proper setup for different body types.
The weight rating on this compact unit is 660 lbs. Therefore, while the strongest people in the world may want a bulkier option, this will get the job done for most home gym owners interested. To get to this weight, you’ll need thinner plates than most bumper plates with the 12″ chrome sleeves. Bands can be added to vary the resistance, which is a nice add-on.
Additional Features
Overall, this is a very well-put-together unit and is easy to operate. Some highlights include:
- It’s built with commercial quality and will hold up well in just about any environment it’s put in.
- It’s easy to adjust the angles, footplate, and pop-pin.
- The padding is comfortable but firm. It provides the right amount of back support for heavier lifts.
- It’s smooth and quiet, so it will not disturb others around you.
- Handles are placed in an easy-to-grasp location, which helps you focus on leg drive.
- The calf block is a nice feature that is easy to add in or remove and works well.
This compact leg press is appropriately priced at $999. A cheaper alternative would be the $699 option from Titan. However, we’ve not yet tested that one. This option from Force USA is a safer bet.
Conclusion
In the end, the Compact Leg Press from Force USA would be an ideal lower body strength machine for many home gym owners. It doesn’t take up quite as much space as your traditional leg press machine, is well constructed, and will get your legs burning without putting too much pressure on the spine.
