Ashton, the founder of Freedom Fitness Equipment, talks about starting his own company, the podcast, the Home Gym Reviewers list, and more.
This episode can be watched on Spotify or YouTube and listened to on Apple, Anchor, or wherever you typically listen to podcasts.
(0:00) Can you start by telling us how you began Freedom Fitness Equipment? COVID had started. Ashton flipped a rack plus some more and soon realized that this could turn into a business. It quickly expanded from space to space (as more equipment was added) until it was time for a warehouse. During this time, he also left his corporate finance job.
(5:00) As COVID progressed, did you have a massive influx of commercial gym equipment as they struggled? And, how did you finance that? Ashton is a huge Dave Ramsey fan. He started his business in a scrappy way and debt-free. In addition, he hasn’t gone out and purchased abandoned gyms but did not have the space to take advantage.
(7:38) Do you ever have to fight the urge to keep the equipment? Yes, yes, he does. Luckily most of the equipment takes up a bit too much space.
(10:17) How long has your podcast been going on? It’s been going on for about one year, every week, with a new podcast each week.
(11:59) Who’s your favorite guest you’ve had so far? Garage Gym Lab and Gabriele Burgholzer (America’s Strongest Woman) are at the top of the list so far.
(15:21) You’re very active on TikTok. How has that worked out for you? It’s a grind trying to put out enough content, but it is growing steadily. At times, posts get some hate from the random/younger audience.

(17:43) Why and how did you decide to start a list of the best home gym websites? There wasn’t anything showcasing the top review sites, and he wanted to highlight some of the top websites doing this type of work.
(20:27) What are the issues you see today in the “gym equipment reviewer” space? A lack of genuine takes (you did it because you got paid) and a lack of reviews on used gym equipment.
(22:42) What’s it take to get on that list? Transparency, a variety of brands, and then detailed reviews that show that it’s been tested out are at the top of the list for Ashton.
(29:54) Ashton explains the benefits of looking at used commercial gym equipment “Used commercial gym equipment is where it’s at.” This type of equipment will last for many years and can be purchased at a steep discount.
